Editorial: Effort, results deserve respect

The Activities Council of Bradley University released the names of the performers for the Feb. 4 spring concert Monday morning over fall break. Initially, there was a great amount of excitement over Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who are a billboard Top 40 duo and have collectively raked in four Grammy awards.

Additionally, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were the option that received the most votes in a survey sent out last semester by Lauren Smetana, assistant director of student activities.

However, rumblings quickly began over social media outlets, mostly on Yik Yak, after the announcement. Students expressed discontent with the choice, with reasoning ranging from Macklemore not being relevant today to Twenty One Pilots, which was an option on the survey, being a better choice.

Students’ first response to any campus announcement seems to be to complain. It must be some requirement of our human nature to have to be irritable and discontent at least one hour a day.

Yes, there will always be people who grumble. ACBU’s Featured Entertainment Committee can’t please everyone.

But we ask students who are voicing their dissatisfaction to consider the bigger picture.

Bradley is a relatively small school, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis aren’t too shabby for a spring concert. Also, the committee asked for student input, which they were not required to do, and they chose to seek out and book the most voted for artist.

If you hate the frontline artist, don’t just complain about it on Yik Yak. Did you vote on the survey? If not, you should have done so in order to let ACBU know your opinion. If you chose not to vote because you didn’t see an artist you liked on the survey, suggest one to ACBU. The members of the entertainment committee aren’t mind readers.

Student organizations put innumerable hours of hard work and passion into creating interesting, original campus events.

We should acknowledge and commend ACBU’s efforts.
